Area Information

LaRue County, one of the oldest settlement areas in the state, is home to the second oldest Baptist church west of the Alleghenies. In 1780, explorer and surveyor Philip Phillips led pioneers here and built the first settlement. In 1788, Robert Hodgen, one of the original settlers, received permission to build a mill on the Nolynn River at what is now Hodgenville.

In 1826, Hodgenville was incorporated on land of the now deceased Hodgen at petition of his wife and son. LaRue County would be formed in 1843. Perhaps Hodgenville's biggest claim to fame however, is its being the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln on the Sinking Spring farm to the south.

Our area has also been home to well-known authors, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew and other influential figures in American and Kentucky life. Seven congressmen have lived here and in LaRue County.

LaRue County boasts an outstanding school system, with three area elementary schools, one intermediate school (5-6 grades), one middle school (7-8 grades) and one high school. There are over 30 colleges & universities within 60 miles of Hodgenville.

Elizabethtown, 12 miles away, is home to WKU - Elizabethtown Extended Campus And Elizabethtown Community & Technical College. Campbellsville University is 26 miles away and Saint Catharine College is 28 miles.

Louisville, 45 miles away is home to the University of Louisville, Daymar College, Louisville Campus, Decker College of Business Technology, RETS Institute of Technology, Louisville Campus, Louisville Technical Institute, Spencerian College, Main Campus, Bellarmine University, Jefferson Community & Technical College, Sullivan University, National College of Business & Technology, Louisville Branch, ITT Technical Institute, Louisville Area Campus, Jefferson Community & Technical College, Main Campus, and Spalding University.

The LaRue County Chamber of Commerce operates a Visitor's Center to provide information to guests to the area on the local Lincoln attractions, as well as directions to other areas of interest in the region.

Lincoln's birthplace is about 3 miles south of Hodgenville and his Boyhood Home is approximately 7 miles northeast of Hodgenville. Both of these areas are managed by the National Park Service.

The Lincoln Museum, Kentucky's official museum related to Lincoln's life and times, occupies two historic buildings in downtown Hodgenville.

The Lincoln Statue was placed on the town square in 1910, with Lincoln's son attending the dedication ceremony. It remains a fixture on the Hodgenville town square and is a popular photo-op with residents and visitors alike.

Other area attractions within a 50-mile radius of LaRue County are Historic Bardstown and My Old Kentucky Home State Park, the Kentucky Railway Museum, Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest cave system in the world, and The Patton Museum and U.S. Gold Depository at Fort Knox.

In addition to a range of school athletic programs, there are active youth soccer, baseball, football and softball programs in the area. LaRue County Park provides swimming and tennis facilities, along with fields for youth baseball, softball and soccer. The LaRue County Golf Course features 18 holes situated conveniently between the Hodgenville and Buffalo communities.

Just one block away from the historic Hodgenville downtown is Creekfront Park, with walking trails that are handicapped accessible and skating areas under development.

Area streams, lakes and ponds provide prime bass and crappie fishing. There's also hunting for deer, wild turkey, doves, squirrels and rabbits.

Hodgenville and LaRue County are great places to live or visit! If you're in the area, just stop by our United Country office and tell us what you're looking for in the way of real estate. We're here to help you any way we can.
